“I am behind Chief Hearn 100% and he will be there as chief for as long as he wants to stay,” Mayor Joseph Bianchi said at the meeting. “I feel very safe with him there and the people of North Arlington should feel very secure and safe with John at the helm.”
Hearn, a 28-year member of the police department, had been serving as acting chief since Louis Ghione retired on July 1.
Being the highest-ranking police officer, Hearn was selected to fill the chief position. The mayor and council have decided not to fill the open captain position at this time, but they said they may revisit that decision in January.
Hearn's family including his parents, Edward and June Hearn, his wife Ellen Mary, and daughter Katie were all present at the swearing-in ceremony.
